What Is a Transponder Key?
Modern cars rely on built-in security, which is why many keys have a chip inside. A transponder key—also called a “chip key”—has a small electronic chip in the plastic head. That chip talks to your vehicle’s immobilizer using radio frequency (RF) signals. When you turn the ignition, the car sends a coded signal to the chip. If the chip replies with the correct code, the vehicle allows the engine to start.
This tech became common in the 1990s to cut down on theft. Unlike old-fashioned metal keys that work only by shape, transponder keys add an electronic safeguard. So even if someone makes a perfect copy of the blade, the car won’t start without a correctly programmed chip.

At 8:30 PM on a Tuesday my wife and kids were locked out of the car. I called the first ad on Google and got a foreign call center that wanted my date of birth.
